What GEO means
Generative Engine Optimization is the discipline of making a brand retrievable, resolvable, and credible enough that AI systems cite it when generating answers. The term covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews.
The distinction from traditional SEO is what you're competing for. A search engine returns ten results and lets the user choose. A generative engine composes one answer and attributes it to a handful of sources. There is no position four and no consolation click.
In practice GEO rests on four conditions: your pages must be retrievable by AI crawlers, your brand must resolve to a recognisable entity, your claims must be corroborated by independent sources, and your content must contain passages that can be extracted cleanly.
Why it matters for AI search
A growing share of high-intent research now starts inside an assistant that never shows a results page. If your brand isn't named in that answer, you weren't ranked lower — you were absent entirely, and no signal tells you it happened.
The brands getting cited aren't necessarily the best ones. They're the ones the model can retrieve, resolve, and find corroborated information about. That's a solvable problem, and it's usually solved somewhere other than where teams look first.

How to get it right
The four conditions, in order
- Fix retrieval first — verify GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot receive full rendered content, not an empty shell
- Make your entity resolvable with accurate Organization schema, consistent naming, and a verified sameAs graph
- Earn independent corroboration; a claim that appears only on your own domain is treated as an assertion
- Restructure priority pages so each section answers a question and survives being quoted alone
- Benchmark a fixed prompt set before you start, so you can tell whether any of it worked

What's the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO optimizes for position in a ranked list. GEO optimizes for inclusion as a named source in a composed answer. They share a foundation — both need a crawlable, fast, credible, well-structured site — but they diverge in what happens after retrieval.
Most GEO work improves classic SEO as a side effect. The reverse isn't reliably true: plenty of brands rank in the top three and appear in almost no AI answers.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap heavily and the industry uses both loosely. GEO generally emphasises being cited as a source within a broader generated answer. AEO emphasises being the extracted direct answer to a specific question.
Roughly 80% of the underlying work is shared. Be sceptical of anyone selling them as two separate retainers.
How long does GEO take to work?
Retrieval fixes can register within weeks — if a crawler was blocked, unblocking it changes things on the next crawl cycle. Entity and schema work typically shows in four to eight weeks.
Corroboration building is the slow part, usually two to four months, because it depends on third parties publishing and being re-crawled.
Can you guarantee AI citations?
No, and nobody can. Model outputs are probabilistic, vary by phrasing, and change with every update. Anyone guaranteeing specific citations is misrepresenting how these systems work.
What's achievable is measurable progress: a documented baseline, a defined prompt set, and honest monthly reporting on movement.
