What Is a Featured Snippet?

In one sentence

A featured snippet is the answer box Google displays above organic results, quoting a passage from a page it considers the best direct answer.

What Featured Snippet means

Snippets come in paragraph, list, table and video formats. Google selects a passage from a page already ranking, usually in the top ten, and displays it with attribution.

You can't request one. Selection is algorithmic and depends heavily on whether a clean, well-formatted answer exists on the page.

Why it matters for AI search

The discipline overlaps almost entirely with AEO. The same structural work — answer first, self-contained, matching query phrasing — serves both surfaces.

That makes snippet optimization an unusually efficient investment: one change, two surfaces, and it's measurable in tools you already have.

Snippet capture went from 9% to 41% of tracked queries.

No new content. The same pages restructured so a clean, extractable answer existed near the relevant heading.

How to get it right

Winning featured snippets

  • Target queries where you already rank in the top ten — snippets come from there
  • Put a direct 40–60 word answer immediately under a question-shaped heading
  • Use lists and tables where the query implies a sequence or comparison
  • Match the query's phrasing in the heading rather than a clever alternative
  • Track snippet ownership separately from ranking, since they move independently

Common questions

Do featured snippets still exist with AI Overviews?

Yes, though AI Overviews appear above them on many queries and can reduce their prominence.

The optimization work still pays off because it also improves AI Overview citation eligibility.

Does winning a snippet reduce clicks?

Sometimes, on queries the snippet fully answers. On more complex queries it often increases clicks by making you the most visible result.

It varies enough by query type that it's worth measuring rather than assuming.

Can we opt out of featured snippets?

Yes, with nosnippet or max-snippet directives, but it also reduces your normal snippet in results.

Rarely the right call for brands selling something.

These come up alongside Featured Snippet constantly.
