What Are Google AI Overviews?

In one sentence

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above organic results in Google Search, answering the query directly and citing a handful of sources.

What AI Overviews means

AI Overviews are Google's generative answers, shown at the top of the results page. They synthesise information from multiple sources and link to a small number of them.

They were tested under the name SGE (Search Generative Experience) before shipping. You'll still see the old term in older material — the optimization approach hasn't fundamentally changed.

Why it matters for AI search

They occupy the position above every organic result, which means they intercept the click a top ranking used to earn. On informational queries where the Overview answers completely, click-through falls sharply.

You can't opt out without also removing the ranking that feeds it. The realistic response is to be one of the cited sources, and to shift emphasis toward query types where a click still has value.

Which query types trigger Overviews, and what it costs when they do.

Overview exposure by query type

% of tracked queries
Informational84%
How-to76%
Commercial research41%
Comparison38%
Transactional12%
Navigational4%

Exposure is concentrated, not uniform.

Informational queries carry most of the risk. If your traffic is weighted there, model the click impact before assuming falling clicks mean falling visibility — they often don't.

How to get it right

Getting cited in an Overview

  • Rank well enough to be a candidate — Overviews draw predominantly from pages already ranking
  • Make sure a clean, self-contained passage answers the query directly
  • Strengthen entity signals; knowledge graph presence measurably improves grounding eligibility
  • Make author credentials explicit, especially in health, finance and legal categories
  • Track citation separately from ranking — the gap between them is the actionable finding

Common questions

Can we stop AI Overviews using our content?

Only by preventing indexing, which removes your organic ranking too. There's no mechanism to rank normally while being excluded.

nosnippet and max-snippet directives limit what's displayed but also weaken snippet presence. It's a real tradeoff and rarely right for brands selling something.

Does ranking first mean we'll be cited?

No, and this surprises people. Citation selection is a separate process weighing passage clarity, entity signals and source credibility.

We regularly see clients ranking first while a lower-ranked competitor is the one cited above them.

Are AI Overviews reducing organic traffic?

On informational queries, frequently yes and measurably so — impressions hold while clicks fall. Commercial and transactional queries are less affected so far.

It's worth modelling specifically rather than assuming, because the response differs completely depending on the answer.

These come up alongside AI Overviews constantly.
